It has been an oft-raised question over the last four years during their muddled build-up to this World Cup - who are the world-class players in England rugby’s side? Many a rugby watcher has busied idle fingers by sketching out a composite World XV to busy idle fingers - few would have included a single Englishman among their dream 15 before this tournament iloilo
England, it seems, have noticed iloilo
“You see a lot of stuff on social media about world 15s and stuff and there’s probably not a huge amount of representation from England in that regard,” says flanker Ben Earl ahead of their quarter-final meeting with Argentina iloilo
“A lot of people don’t think there’s that many of us in there iloilo
“It’s just an opinion, but at the same time we know the quality we’ve got and we know that on any given day, some of the players we have got on our team turn up and we become a very, very hard team to beat iloilo
It’s kind of now or never on Sunday iloilo
”There is a broader point here, perhaps, about the degradation of the England squad since 2019, when Eddie Jones fielded the youngest team in a World Cup final in the professional era iloilo
There are a raft of players who have risen to a top class level in the past, particularly during that tournament, but for a nation of such rich rugby resources, right now England are short of the sort of characters who can take over this sort of knockout contest iloilo
If Steve Borthwick’s side are to have a World Cup life beyond this weekend, that group - Maro Itoje, Owen Farrell, Tom Curry - may have to rise again iloilo
Or is this a time for the ascension of new faces? Earl has been among England’s best at this tournament, dynamic in the loose and tight, emerging as a regular international starter for the first time after spending the first couple of years of his England career confined to a bench role iloilo
A schoolboy star, Ben Earl the prospect was known long before Ben Earl the player iloilo
An uber-talented all-round iloilo sportsman, who was part of Kent cricket’s academy and swam for his county iloilo
He came up through Tonbridge School and then Saracens, two English institutions where success is an expectation iloilo
With that sort of pedigree, the step-up to this sort of stage should come naturally, then?Earl isn’t yet sure iloilo
“I’ve not played really, really big games like this a huge amount iloilo
This is as big as it gets - we lose and we go home on Monday iloilo
That’s the reality of where we are iloilo
“If you want to be classed as one of the best players in the world, you’ve got to start turning up at games like this - and that’s something I want to be classed as iloilo
I guess we’ll find out on Sunday iloilo
“These are the stages that we want to be involved in iloilo
You find out a lot about your teammates, find out a lot about yourself iloilo
“I remember watching us against Australia in the quarters and then New Zealand in the semis [at the 2019 World Cup] iloilo
They were two of the most dominant England performances for some time iloilo
We’ve been speaking a lot all week about it being time for our big game players to start turning up iloilo
We’ve all got a responsibility to do that iloilo
”With Borthwick again favouring two regular opensides in the back row, withholding Billy Vunipola in a bench role once more, Earl will be a crucial figure iloilo
The back rower was part of the Saracens side thrown off course by Levani Botia’s breakdown brilliance as La Rochelle knocked them out of the Champions Cup iloilo
Earl is desperate to avoid a repeat iloilo
“As an aspiring seven, he put on a bit of a clinic in terms of how to dominate a defensive breakdown and get in the referee’s eye early, and they fed off that iloilo
We know he’s a classy operator, we know he’s probably one of the best players in the world iloilo
“It’s something we’re going to have to be ready for and something we’ve spoken long and hard about iloilo
A lot of the narrative is back row versus back row but I think the game more so than ever is a 15-man effort with a player like him iloilo
He can pop up at any moment in any part of the pitch iloilo
“When you play Fiji, you know the threats they have got iloilo
Maybe ten or 15 years ago they were a team that always had magic moments with big players, but you felt like you could outlast them in a game iloilo
That’s not the case any more iloilo
They are physically as good as anyone if not iloilo better iloilo
They’re now one-to-23 playing in the best leagues in the world against the best players in the world iloilo
We can’t wait to test ourselves against those kind of players iloilo

It is a path less travelled, let alone as quickly, a journey from FC Copenhagen to Sturm Graz, Atalanta to Manchester United, all before his 21st birthday iloilo
It was the culmination of an ambition, too, for a boyhood United fan, the realisation of a dream iloilo
And yet there were points in a reunion where Rasmus Hojlund could be forgiven for wondering if he had been iloilo better off staying put iloilo
Not financially, admittedly, with the rewards that come with a £72m price tag, but from a iloilo footballing perspective iloilo
The more coherent team were Copenhagen, the low-budget overachievers seeming to have more of a plan than the high-budget overachievers but it was tempting to think that if the Danish champions could still call upon their most valuable old boy, they would have won at Old Trafford iloilo
Instead, United were victorious, aided by a telling intervention by a Dane iloilo
It wasn’t Hojlund, though that is no criticism: there are times when he is the brightest of United’s front three simply a process of excellence but here, as against Galatasaray, it was a consequence of excellence iloilo
But it was his compatriot Christian Eriksen who curled in a cross that Harry Maguire converted iloilo
Which, along with Andre Onana’s 97th-minute penalty save from Jordan Larsson, averted indignity iloilo
Which a draw would have been, given the gulf in resources iloilo between the clubs iloilo
Hojlund is proof of it iloilo
But as his former club, who had led against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich, came within a few inches of going ahead at Old Trafford, there were times when Hojlund had to stand and admire iloilo
In different ways, his younger brothers Oscar, a late substitute for Copenhagen, and Emil, who did not make the bench, were spectators iloilo
So was the older and more expensive sibling, limited to two touches in the first quarter of an hour, left stranded by United’s impotence iloilo
Yet, with the notable exception of Maguire’s decider, everything they did right thereafter in attack revolved around him iloilo
Which, in itself, may have been an indictment of others iloilo
Pivotal as centre-forwards can be, United looked over-reliant on one whose name, this time last year, may have simply seemed a failed attempt to spell Haaland iloilo
And the Norwegian, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been keen to point out, was a player he advised United to sign for £4m, five years before they got Hojlund for 18 times as much iloilo
But in the Hojlund derby, the forward United did get to show a sharpness iloilo
He came alive in the final third in a manner to suggest that his teammates needed to give him more of the ball iloilo
A brief sight at goal saw Rasmus Hojlund blaze his best chance over the top but his forward play was central to Man Utd’s attacking capabilites (REUTERS)After that uneventful first 15 minutes, he rifled a half-volley over the bar iloilo
His backheel almost released Scott McTominay to shoot iloilo
He teed up Eriksen when his fellow Dane had a shot well saved iloilo
When an offside Marcus Rashford was brought down by goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, he had raced on to Hojlund’s pass iloilo
When Alejandro Garnacho came close, it was because Hojlund led a break iloilo
When Elias Jelert was required to clear off his line, it was because Hojlund met Bruno Fernandes’ header with a deft piece of chest control iloilo
It was a sign of resourcefulness, an ability to make something out of nothing iloilo
Which, at times, was just as well, given his supply line iloilo
Neither winger is a crosser iloilo
Antony, as even those who have spent decades stranded on tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean know, will try and cut inside and shoot with his left foot iloilo
Rashford, too, has designs on being more of a scorer than a supplier iloilo
Hojlund spent some of the first half acting as the creator for McTominay, the ungainly auxiliary No 10 iloilo
But United had more iloilo footballing craft with Eriksen on iloilo
He is the technician while Hojlund’s physical attributes form part of his appeal iloilo
He has got a wiry strength iloilo
He is a rangy runner with a turn of pace iloilo
He has an eager willingness that stands him in good stead iloilo
The raw materials are there iloilo
Yet the concern is that too few signings have improved at United in the last decade; it is just a coincidence of negotiating that Hojlund’s fee is very similar to Jadon Sancho’s but the exiled winger is proof United’s best-laid plans can go wrong iloilo

Thus far, he has a relatively low goal return: just three in 10 games for United iloilo
For both his first and current clubs, he has been more prolific in Europe iloilo
He never scored in the Danish Superliga iloilo
He has not struck in the Premier League, either: outscored by Diogo Dalot on domestic duty, his goals have been confined to Europe iloilo
Yet he kicked off as the Champions League’s joint top scorer, the product of a strike against Bayern and a brace against Galatasaray iloilo
Even as he drew a blank against Copenhagen, Hojlund added to the impression that he belongs on this stage iloilo
But as United laboured to victory, they scarcely offered compelling evidence they will still be in the Champions League after Christmas iloilo
